For my Cariad

The 25th of January is St Dwynwen’s Day (Wel: Dydd Santes Dwynwen) a kinda Welsh Valentine’s day for those with Welsh lovers. St Dwynwen is a legendary Welsh figure; the daughter of King Brychan Brycheiniog, who has a forbidden lover Maelon. In one version of the story she saves Maelon by praying to God and in doing so becomes a saint who looks after true lovers.

Since the 1960s, some Welsh couples celebrating both their heritage and their love, have given St Dwynwen’s Day cards to each other. The popularity of this occasion has increased year on year and today whether you speak Welsh, English or both you will find a large range of beautiful cards and gifts to give to your cariad for St Dwynwen’s Day.

We have some perfect Welsh romantic gifts in our Pontypridd shop including hand-carved wooden lovespoons. The lovespoon tradition dates back to the 17th century and reflects the amazing craft skills of the carver. The oldest known lovespoon in Wales is from 1667 and can be found in the St Fagin’s National History Museum.
